Snow and Ice Removal - Sidewalks
*Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours once the snow has ended.*Any sidewalks not cleared within 24 hours are subject to be cleared by the department of public works and could be charged a clearing fee. Unpaid clearing/snow removal fees can be charged on property tax statements.
Sec. 90-118.
- The owner of each lot or part of lot shall be responsible for removing all snow and ice which may have fallen or accumulated upon the full width of the sidewalk in front of the premises which he/she owns not later than 24 hours after the snowfall has ceased to fall or accumulate. Provided that when ice has so formed upon any sidewalk that it cannot be removed, the owner shall be responsible for effectively keeping the same sprinkled with sand, salt or other suitable substance in such manner as to prevent the ice from being dangerous, until such time as it can be removed, and then it shall be promptly removed. Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be subject to Section 1-10. Penalty provisions.
- The department of public works shall cause all sidewalks that have not been cleared of snow and ice to be cleared upon default of the person whose duty it shall be to clear the same. The department of public works shall keep an accurate account of the expenses therefore and repot the same to the finance director, who shall annually prepare a statement of the expenses so incurred in front of each lot or parcel of land; and the amount therein charged to each lot or parcel of land shall be entered by the finance director in the tax roll as special tax against the lot or parcel of land, and the same shall be collected in all respects like other taxes upon real estate. Prosecution under subsection (a) of this section shall not bar the city from proceeding under this subsection, nor shall proceeding under this subsection bar prosecution under subsection (a) of this section.
